What is a Favicon?
Favicon (short for favorite icon) is a small icon displayed in browser tabs, bookmarks, and other interface elements. It helps users quickly identify your website among multiple open tabs and bookmarks.
How to Use Favicons
To add a favicon to your website, you need to:
- Generate and download the Favicon package using our tool.
- Unzip the downloaded package and place all files in your website’s root directory.
- Add the following HTML code to the <head> section of your website:
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="/favicon-16x16.png" sizes="16x16">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="/favicon-32x32.png" sizes="32x32">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="/favicon-48x48.png" sizes="48x48">
<link rel="manifest" href="/site.webmanifest">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="/android-chrome-192x192.png" sizes="192x192">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="/android-chrome-512x512.png" sizes="512x512">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">HTMLFormat Explanations
ICO Format (.ico)
Traditional favicon format compatible with all browsers including older versions of Internet Explorer. Typically contains multiple sizes (16x16, 32x32, 48x48).
PNG Format (.png)
Preferred format for modern browsers, supports transparent backgrounds, smaller file sizes. 16x16 for tabs, 32x32 for taskbars, 48x48 for desktop shortcuts.
Android Chrome Icons
192x192 and 512x512 for Android devices’ PWAs (Progressive Web Apps), displayed when users add your website to their home screen.
Apple Touch Icon
180x180 designed specifically for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad). Apple automatically adds rounded corners and shine effects when users add it to their home screen.
Designing Text Favicons That Stay Readable at 16px
Text favicons live or die at tab size. These parameter choices matter more in a text-to-favicon generator than in any image-based tool — what looks sharp in the 512px preview can turn into an unreadable smudge in a real browser tab.
Font family
Heavy sans-serif faces (Arial Black, Helvetica Bold, Futura) survive 16×16 rendering best. The thin strokes of serif, script or condensed fonts often disappear entirely at tab size, even though they look crisp in the preview.
Character count
One letter is ideal. Two-letter monograms work if you drop the font size a step; three or more characters will be illegible in a 16-pixel tab, so reserve long text for the 180×180 Apple touch icon only.
Foreground / background contrast
Aim for a contrast ratio above 7:1. Tabs render on both light and dark browser themes: mid-gray text on a transparent background vanishes on one of them, while a filled shape with white text stays readable on both.
Background shape
A 15-20% corner radius reads as a modern app icon at any size. Fully transparent backgrounds look clean in the preview but float unreadably over dark tab bars — check both themes before shipping.
Padding
Keep the glyph inside 60-70% of the canvas. Browsers draw favicons smaller than the nominal size (a 16px icon inside a larger slot on high-DPI displays), and edge-touching glyphs get visually cropped.
